The first holiday of the school year has already arrived; the spring break. Do you already know what you're going to do with the little one? Or are grandma and grandpa taking care of them this holiday so you can take a break? Well, we've got a whopping thirteen fun activities that you can do together with the kids to make the most of the holiday.

13 activities to do with the kids during the spring break

  1. Organize a winter picnic: Spend time together in nature and enjoy the winter weather! Picnicking is a fun activity to do with the kids during the school holidays. Prepare some delicious dishes beforehand or simply make a few sandwiches with toppings, and you're good to go. Most parks and forests have benches and open picnic areas.
  2. Choose a fun bike ride: This is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors together and get some exercise. There are various cycling routes in the Netherlands, some of which are suitable for children. Make your bike ride extra enjoyable by having a nice lunch or drinks at the end of the ride.
  3. Search for treasures in nature with geocaching: Ever heard of geocaching? It's a fun way to let kids discover and explore. Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt where participants use GPS coordinates to search for hidden treasures in nature. Geocaching is especially a fun challenge for kids who need extra stimulation.
  4. Go for a leisurely walk in nature: A fun activity that allows you to enjoy the fresh air together and get some exercise is hiking. Take a walk along a river or lake, or choose a beautiful nature reserve nearby.
  5. Painting with flowers and leaves: This is a fun way to introduce children to nature and show them how beautiful the flowers and leaves they can find in the area are. Use the flowers and leaves to make prints on paper or use them as brushes for painting.
  6. Decorate flower pots in the garden: As spring approaches, this is a fun way to encourage children to spend more time outdoors and learn about plants. Go into the garden together to decorate flower pots with paint, markers, or stickers. When it's time to pot plants, you can use these decorated pots.
  7. Make a birdhouse or insect hotel: This is a fun way to teach children about nature and how they can help protect animals. Especially if you want to raise your children to be aware and sustainable, this is an educational activity. Make a birdhouse or insect hotel together using various materials such as wood, papier-mâché, or even an old milk carton, and help the local wildlife!
  8. Fold paper airplanes or boats: Still too cold outside? Then you can also get creative indoors. How about a day of crafting? Folding airplanes or boats together is a fun way to keep kids busy and help them develop their fine motor skills. No paper on hand? No worries. You can fold paper airplanes or boats from old magazines or newspapers.
  9. Visit a museum or science center: For all curious and eager-to-learn children, a visit to the museum is a fantastic outing during the holiday. Show the little ones how fun and interesting learning can be. Introduce them to historical artifacts, natural scientific principles, or technological innovations.
  10. A trip to a zoo or aquarium: Let your children learn more about animals and their habitats! At the zoo, children get to see animals they wouldn't easily see otherwise. This way, they learn in a fun way about animal behavior, what they eat, and their role in nature.
  11. Conduct your own experiment: A fun way to show children how science works is by experimenting themselves. Start with a simple experiment like making a volcano or go for a basic chemical reaction. This way, you combine learning and fun in a challenging way.
  12. Visit a library: As we've mentioned in our other blogs, reading is incredibly beneficial for development. A visit to the local library is a great way to show children how much fun they can have reading a book. Libraries often have children's programs during the holidays such as reading sessions or storytellers, double the fun!
  13. Take a educational cooking class: Do you want to teach your children something about nutrition, hygiene, and cooking? Then a cooking class or course is a fun activity for the holiday. By cooking something new together, they learn about nutrients, using the right amounts, and how to follow a recipe. The best part? You can enjoy eating your baking experiment together afterward!
